But in Budapest,cafes serving pour over coffee, using the world’s most advanced filters have the greatest following. Having been chosen in 2017 as the location for the event World of Coffee (click to see our World of Coffee Budapest report),where the world’s cafés, roasters, bean growers and baristas all gather, Budapest is quickly becoming the foremost city for coffee lovers. Allow us to introduce you to the café culture in Budapest, with a focus on how people enjoy their coffee here.

ご存じの方もいるかと思いますが、ヨーロッパでコーヒーと言えばエスプレッソが主流。ところがここブダペストでは、世界でも最先端とされているフィルターを使ったドリップコーヒーを出すカフェが人気を集めています。2017年には、世界中のカフェ、ロースター、豆の生産者、バリスタたちが一堂に会すコーヒーの祭典『World of Coffee』の開催地に選ばれていること（『World of Coffee Budapest』の模様はこちら）からもわかるように、今やブダペストは世界でも最先端のコーヒーが楽しめる街になっているのです。今回はこの街のカフェの様子を中心に、人々がコーヒーをどんな風に楽しんでいるのかをご紹介していきたいと思います。

First, we head to Dose Espresso Budapest, a short walk from Budapest’s popular tourist spot Liberty Square, to ask their thoughts on coffee and opening a café.

まずはブダペストの観光名所のひとつ、自由広場にほど近い『Dose Espresso Budapest』で、お店づくりやコーヒーに対する想いなどを聞きました。

“I opened this café to create a space in Budapest’s city center where different cultures can come together. I want to create a community and a space for people to share their experiences, and I want people to feel the magic of coffee in their daily lives. If coffee enthusiasts and people who simply want to relax in a comfortable space feel at home here, I’d be delighted.”

This really speaks to &Kalita’s motto of “A moment in time, a moment of happiness.” When you walk in, the café idealizes those words—a comfortable space and relaxed atmosphere opening up before you.

「このカフェをつくったのは、ブタペストの中心に異文化が集い、出会う場所をつくろうと思ったから。コミュニティーをつくり、体験を共有する場をつくり、日々の生活の中でコーヒーの魅力を感じてほしいんです。コーヒーを情熱的に愛する人にも、ただ、心地よい時間を、心地よい場所で過ごしたい人にも楽しんでいただけたらいいですね。」

このお話は、&Kalitaが発信するメッセージ「ちょっといい時間、ちょうどいい時間。」にも通じる部分があります。その言葉通り店内に目を向けると、リラックスした雰囲気が漂う居心地のいい空間が広がっていました。

“In our busy lives, it’s essential to stop and hit pause every so often. I’ve chosen relaxing designs for our furniture and interior so that even if it’s just a short break, people can unwind here in a cozy space.”

People flock to Dose Espresso Budapest looking for that combination of coziness and delicious coffee. Here, the baristas love their coffee equipment made by Kalita. So, what’s the story behind how they came to use Kalita products?

「忙しい生活の中では、時々、立ち止まることがとても大切だと思います。ほんのわずかな時間でも、美味しいコーヒーといっしょに、心地よい場所で会話を楽しんだりできるよう、家具やインテリアは、リラックスできるデザインや色を選んでいます。」

そんな居心地のよさと、美味しいコーヒーを求めて多くの人々が集まる『Dose Espresso Budapest』のバリスタたちが愛用しているのもKalitaのコーヒー器具。Kalita製品と出会った経緯とはどんなものだったのでしょうか。

“I first came across Kalita when I entered the Hungarian Brewers Cup in 2016. I was accepted into the competition for my coffee just three weeks prior to the event, so I had to quickly find the best extractionmethod. To be honest, I’d never used Kalita products before, so they weren’t on my list of options. I created a recipe for the competition by trial and error, and it was an impressive recipe, but there was still something missing. By that time, it was three days before the big event. It happened to be my birthday, and I was given a Kalita Dripper as a gift. I was so happy that I brewed a trial coffee for the competition. I was surprised to find the Kalita Dripper gave my coffee a very pure and fruity flavor. I rushed to a coffee shop, bought two more Kalitas and took part in the competition. It was my coffee competition debut—but I won 3rd place!”

「2016年に、『Hungary Brewers Cup』にエントリーしたことがきっかけですね。大会の3週間前に自分の納得できるコーヒーが完成したので、急いでベストな抽出スタイルを見つける必要があったんです。正直、Kalita製品を使ったことがなかったので、選択肢には入れていませんでした。試行錯誤の結果、大会で発表するレシピが完成しました。なかなかのできばえでしたが、ちょっと物足りなさも感じていたんですよね。そうこうしているうちに大会3日前を迎えました。偶然にもちょうどその日は私の誕生日で、プレゼントにKalitaのドリッパーをもらったんです。とてもうれしかったので、試しに大会用のコーヒーを淹れてみました。すると驚いたことに、より純粋で、フルーティーな味わいを引き出すことができたんです。急いでコーヒーショップに行き、もう2つKalitaを購入して大会に臨み、初出場で3位に入賞することができたんです。」

Next, we headed to the café Fekete, which calls itself “possibly the smallest specialty coffee shop in Budapest.” There’s an open space in the back garden, providing a wonderful place for customers to sit and enjoy a nice breakfast. There’s even a distillery. Their coffee is admired for the care that the young, friendly staff takes to brew it, and the breakfast menu includes options that cater towards vegetarians.

自らを「おそらくブダペストで最も小さなコーヒー専門店」と名乗る『Fekete』。裏庭には朝食が楽しめるオープンな客席と醸造所があるとか。若くてフレンドリーなスタッフが丹精込めて淹れるコーヒーが人気で、ベジタリアン向けのメニューも含まれる朝食メニューも楽しめます。

Budapest Baristas is a café that overlooks the bustling thoroughfare of Múzeum körút. The café is popular for its terrace seating, which basks customers in brilliant sunshine. Coffee beans from roasters such as Casino Mocca and Coffee Collective are featured here, and you can also partake in their French-style breakfasts and delicious cakes.
